Isaac Minde, PhD graduate of MSU in Agricultural Economics in 1985 taught and did research at the University of Dar es Salaam and later Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania. He later worked in the CGIAR, first with IITA and later with ICRISAT and also in the sub-regional agricultural research –the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa. He joined AFRE as Professor in International Development on a fixed-term contract in 2011. His first assignment was at the University of Pretoria as Team Leader of a network of four universities (MSU included) on research in Modernizing African Food Systems and later as Deputy Project Director of a USAID Feed the Future which is a six-university consortium capacity building project based in Tanzania. Currently Isaac Minde is mostly dealing with research on linking farmers to markets—especially input and output markets with the overall motive of enhancing agricultural productivity growth which is so critical in getting the majority of farmers out of poverty. Isaac Minde is a distinguished fellow of the African Association of Agricultural Economists. At the moment, he is mostly involved in a project—Agricultural Sector Policy and Institutional Reform Strengthening (ASPIRES).
Research and Outreach Interests
- Initially appointed District Agricultural Development Officer, and this continues to stimulate his interest in smallholder agricultural development. In this regard, research and extension linkage and the associated factors affecting adoption of crop and natural resource technologies, agricultural policy analysis and policy formulation: dealing with the policy change cycle; moving from data to analysis to dialogue to uptake of policy analysis results by policy makers.
- As Deputy Project Director of a 5-year agricultural training and research project in Tanzania, currently heavily involved in training a new generation of agricultural managers, teachers and researchers.
